Playgroup SA is the peak body for playgroups in South Australia. Since 1974, we’ve supported families, children, and communities by creating welcoming spaces where every child can connect, play, learn, and thrive. We work alongside volunteers, government, and community partners to make sure playgroups remain a vital part of the early years.
At Playgroup SA, we believe that play is a powerful catalyst for learning, connection, and wellbeing. Playgroups are trusted, inclusive spaces where children’s development is nurtured, families form meaningful relationships, and communities grow stronger. We recognise the first 2,000 days of life as a critical window in which children build the foundations for lifelong learning and health. By bringing families together during this time, we create environments where parents feel supported, share experiences, and grow in confidence, ensuring every child has the best possible start.
Playgroup SA creates environments where families can build strong relationships, share knowledge, and support their children’s learning in the earliest years. Guided by our PETAL framework (Play, Education, Training, Accreditation, Learning), we strengthen the capabilities of parents, volunteers, and staff so that playgroups become thriving community hubs. Our approach is grounded in evidence showing that playgroups foster children’s development, build parental confidence, and increase social connection. By weaving prevention, inclusion, and capacity-building into every program, we ensure families experience playgroups as safe, empowering environments that grow with their needs.
We support volunteers to start, run, and sustain more than 500 playgroups across South Australia. We provide training, insurance, resources, and ongoing advice so coordinators feel confident and families feel welcome.
Tailored supports for families of children with disability, developmental concerns, or from culturally and linguistically diverse or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.
Child developmental checks and early help and support.
Programs such as PlayConnect+, PALS, and PEEP LTP that provide additional pathways for families seeking more tailored support.
We strengthen the early childhood sector through training, resources, and professional learning for coordinators, facilitators, and volunteers. Guided by our PETAL framework, we embed inclusive practice and deliver training including PEEP Learning Together Program, equipping the community to support every child and family.
Playgroups make a measurable difference for children, families, and communities. Families who participate report stronger connections, greater confidence in their parenting, and easier pathways into health, education, and community supports. Children who attend playgroups are 40% more likely to start school developmentally on track in areas such as language, social skills, and emotional wellbeing. Communities benefit too, with playgroups building local networks of trust, belonging, and volunteering that strengthen resilience. At Playgroup SA, families are never left to navigate the journey alone. From helping volunteers establish local groups to providing specialist support, we ensure every child has the best possible start.
Playgroup SA acknowledges and respects the traditional custodians of the South Australian regions upon whose ancestral lands our Playgroups operate on.
We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Elders, past, present and future for they old the memories, the traditions, the culture and the hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
We also pay respect to the cultural authority of Aboriginal people from other areas of South Australia and Australia and acknowledge their deep feelings of attachment and Spiritual relationship to Country.
Playgroup SA recognises the pain and suffering caused by past policies to Aboriginal Australians and the impact this has had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people today.
At Playgroup SA we are committed to a future of reconciliation, we believe that there is much knowledge and wisdom to be gained by Aboriginal Australians, by the learning of Country, land, cultures, truths and realities.
